Denver's best Santa

Ho, ho, ho! My personal opinion--and what I've heard from other families here in the Mile High City--is that the best Santa visit can be found in Larimer Square. I wrote about Larimer Square in my Moon Denver guidebook, but I think I neglected to mention this holiday highlight. Santa Claus has a special spot behind the shops the restaurants where visitors can take their own photos--no pressure to buy any expensive packages! Make a day of it with a stop for lunch and a horse-drawn sleigh ride under the beautiful awning of holiday lights over the square.

more than summer concerts at Denver Botanic Gardens

Last night I had the pleasure of attending an indoor "concert" at the Denver Botanic Gardens and realized that I maybe should have mentioned that possibility in my Moon Denver guidebook. The outdoor summer concerts are very popular--I think they built the new two-story parking lot just to accommodate those crowds--but it's good to know that when the gardens are decorated for Blossoms of Light, there is still a lot on offer at the gardens in the chilly weather.

Find Denver on Facebook

Since I wrote my Moon Denver guidebook in 2008, it seems like social networking has really boomed (or maybe i just joined the boom?). Now there are many ways to "follow" Mile High City events and deals on Twitter and Facebook. One that's been handy lately is on Facebook, Winter Holidays in Denver, and if you become a fan then you'll receive regular (but not too often) status updates about fun activities around Denver.

Udi's Cafe is Denver original

When I walked into the Udi's Cafe at Stapleton this morning I realized that I had made a big mistake--in not including this wonderful place in my Moon Denver guidebook! Oops. I confess, some places got overlooked. I love the story behind Udi's--a real person, an immigrant actually who became a entrepreneur with a sandwich delivery business then bakery and now restaurants. Go to http://udisfood.com/cafes.php to find a location, see menus...go in to smell fresh baked bread, try their signature line of granola or sip freshly-squeezed juice. I will be adding Udi's to the next edition of my Moon Denver guidebook.

Denver's Artisan Center popular!

Wow, I was out doing some holiday shopping in Denver's Cherry Creek North neighborhood yesterday and the action was at the Artisan Center. In my Moon Denver guidebook I wrote about how this shop is busy yearround, but ridiculous! It was a gorgeous sunny Colorado day and there were at least 4 men sitting outside waiting while (maybe) their wives shopped inside. I could already turn around in there. Exciting to see enthusiastic shopping in this troubled economy.

bye-bye Chez Jose

Another favorite place in Denver's Cherry Creek neighborhood is going out of business in 2009...this time it's restaurant Chez Jose, which I wrote about on page 62 of my Moon Denver guidebook. I read about it in the Denver Post this morning:

http://www.denverpost.com/husted/ci_13974360?source=rsshomecol

Sure, there are plenty of burrito places nowadays, but Chez Jose was an original that will be missed.

Denver's ski gear deals

I was in REI the other day--the flagship store that I wrote about on page 141 of my Moon Denver guidebook--and discovered that in the basement where you pick up rentals (as well as online orders with free shipping direct to the store), there are bargains! Kind of like when the rental car company sells off the fleet, here they have rental gear for sale as-is. I saw skis and boots at significant markdowns. Just another place to look for deals here in the Mile High City.

LoHi Steakbar details

A couple of months ago I wrote about the LoHi Steakbar on this blog and I do intend to add this new restaurant and bar to the next edition of my Moon Denver guidebook. For now, get more details on the place from this Denver Post article:

Denver's 2010 Art Biennial

I referenced the upcoming and first ever Denver Art Biennial in the Arts & Leisure chapter of my Moon Denver guidebook, and here is a Denver Post article with a little more on what to expect, maybe:

Starz Denver Film Festival

I included the Starz Denver International Film Festival in my Moon Denver guidebook's Art & Leisure chapter. The 32nd annual festival opened this weekend with the much-talked about "Precious" and the schedule has lots of big name stars, films and many filmmakers with a Denver connections. With the snow falling, it's a perfect weekend for a movie or two...or three or more.

Marriott's Second Home Kitchen & Bar in Denver's Cherry Creek District

Of course I included the JW Marriott in my Moon Denver guidebook, but I don't think I really recommended it. Well, now I do! I had a chance to tour a suite and nosh on appetizers at the Second Home Kitchen & Bar. First the suite: did I see two bathrooms? Wow. Amazing views of the mountains, downtown, Cheesman Park, walking distance to great Cherry Creek shops and such a spacious room, or make that rooms with an 's'. The patio with cozy outdoor modern fire pit is the best for a chic night out. I cannot wait to go back and make a meal of those sweet potato chips and dip! The homemade tater tots were to die for--all of it as advertised, delicious and just sophisticated enough comfort food. I will be adding Second Home as its on restaurant listing in my next edition.

Denver's Union Station

In my Moon Denver guidebook I talked about Denver's Union Station as the anchor of the LoDo neighborhood. I also referenced the history behind this architectural gem, which has been greatly reduced since its heyday. Here's a local news item about how one of my favorite local preservationists, Dana Crawford, is trying to restore some of the grandeur:

Denver's sunrises

Good Morning! I just had the pleasure of watching a stunning Mile High City sunrise. While I have no idea if there is a place talking about pretty sunrises and sunsets in my Moon Denver guidebook, it seems worth sharing here at least. It's a reminder of our wide open skies and with our cold autumn mornings the colors are spectacular.

Gates Planetarium tip

Here's a real life insider tip for anyone who goes to Gates Planetarium to see a show: no late admittance whatsoever. We showed up 3 minutes late on a very busy Sunday at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science and were told it's against fire code to allow anyone in the darkened theater. Good to know when planning a visit! In fact, you should be there at least 10 minutes early. People line up even when it's not sold out.

more Denver Arts Week

Definitely go to www.denverartsweek.com to find $52.80 deals on hotels such as the Oxford, the Curtis and more that I included in my Moon Denver guidebook as well as restaurants like Duo in Denver's Highlands neighborhood or Il Posto that are participating as well. The schedule of participating events is huge and the weather is perfect to soak up the culture of the Mile High City this weekend.

Denver Arts Week

While still a fledgling annual event, Denver Arts Week is about to launch its 3rd year and I'm hearing about lots of interesting deals, discounts and freebies that are tie ins to the Mile High City's cultural scene. I did write about Denver Arts Week in the pages of my Moon Denver guidebook but honestly had been unaware of its first two years, so this year I'm looking forward to exploring.

For starters, check out C & H Glassworks in the Denver suburb of Lakewood, www.chglassworks.com, where you can see glass blowing demonstrations this weekend, Nov. 6-8. I would love to see a little glass orange pumpkin made--and can even buy one for 10% off or enter to win a $100 gift certificate. Watch the artists at work and tour the gallery.

Over at the Children's Museum of Denver, which is one of the Sights in my Moon Denver guidebook, get in free on Sat., 11/7 from 5-10 p.m. (a little late for kiddos, but okay) or get a $1 off admission when you bring in new or gently used art supplies. Check the schedule for different daily art themes throughout the week.

Denver's fall snowstorm!

Unexpected storm but welcome moisture hit the Mile High City before Halloween this year. Although in my Moon Denver guidebook I mentioned these occasionally paralyzing snowstorms, I was thinking of wintertime! Flights at Denver International Airport have been hugely affected and many businesses shut down this week but now it looks like the sun is coming out and trick or treating will go on in the slush.

Little House musical coming to Denver

Tickets just went on sale this week for the upcoming musical, "Little House on the Prairie" at Denver's Buell Theatre, playing Dec. 15-27. This starts Melissa Gilbert as Ma, and she is of course famous for playing Laura in the long-running TV version of the classic books. The Buell is included on page 94 of my Moon Denver guidebook is part of the DPAC in downtown.

Denver's Magnolia Hotel only $79

For a limited time Denver's Magnolia Hotel--one of my recommended hotels in my Moon Denver guidebook--is offering weekend night rates that start at a mere $79! That includes turndown cookies and breakfast buffet too!

Haunted Manitou Springs?

In my Moon Denver guidebook I wrote about Manitou Springs on pages 185-188 and it is a place I truly love and like to take friends to visit as well. I recently received an e-mail that makes Manitou a destination for those who liked to be spooked during this Halloween Season. I listed the Miramont Castle in my guidebook but did not know that there is a photo of a figure that appears in a mirror only, not the actual room. Boo! There is also an annual coffin race through town and a few other instances of "paranormal activity" at some of the town's historic mansions.

Brrr...not your typical Denver weather

As we've enjoyed a wetter and cooler summer this year, I've not joined the complainers. Instead I have joyfully embraced the changes as being like the old days when Colorado seemed more seasonal with distinctions between summer and fall. However, now I'm ready to cry, "Uncle!" This has been such a cold fall and we're expecting snowfall before Halloween! On page 197 of my Moon Denver guidebook I address the local weather and climate. I think I forgot to mention what my sister pointed out on her visit last week, "I'll be here four days and might see all four seasons!" Well, it didn't quite get summery hot but there was spring, summer and winter all at once.

Moon Denver guidebook giveaway

You can win a copy of my Moon Denver guidebook this month! Go to www.milehighmamas.com and look for the Halloween picture contest and read the details. I wonder if I can enter my own cutie in her Halloween costume? Hmmm...

Nice Denver guidebook review

Thank you Denver Life Magazine! It's a little late, but just today I got a copy of a lovely review of my Moon Denver guidebook in the July/August issue of Denver Life, www.denverlifemagazine.com. I was unable to access it online myself. They did a perfect job of summing up the many ways this book is handy for locals and their out-of-town guests.

Denver's new Bookery Nook

Independent bookstores are rare anymore, so it is exciting to find one so charming as the Bookery Nook in the Highlands neighborhood of Denver. Located on Tennyson Street between restaurants, shops and art galleries, the Bookery Nook makes itself a worthy destination with its tidy adult and children sections (including a few puzzles and toys). They have weekly events--storytime for kids, book signings and more. Find out more at www.thebookerynook.com, and this will be added to the next edition of my Moon Denver guidebook but first they need to get my current edition in stock soon!

Silver LEED for Beaver Creek's Westin!

For all you eco-travelers out there, Colorado now has a silver LEED certified hotel in the Westin Riverfont Resort & Spa in Beaver Creek! I will be adding the Westin Riverfront to the next edition of my Moon Denver guidebook. It is the only Westin in the world to achieve this status and the 9th hotel in the U.S. What does it all mean? More importantly, how can you experience it? Here's how:

In celebration of its Silver LEED status, the resort has created The Westin Riverfront Green Package. Starting at $149 per night for a studio suite during the off season and $319 per night during peak winter season, the package includes:

Accommodations in a spacious studio suite
Purchase of Verified Carbon Credits to offset the carbon emissions from a round-trip drive to the Vail Valley from metro Denver, purchased from Sustainable Travel International
A bottle of in-house purified water delivered in a recycled glass container from Restaurant Avondale
Participation in Westin’s “Make a Green Choice” program, which allows guests to opt out of towel/linen replacement and housekeeping for up to three days for your choice of either a $5 resort gift card for each night of participation or 500 Starpoints for each stay
Complimentary valet parking when you arrive with more than two people in the vehicle OR in a hybrid vehicle

Guests looking to experience a little extra relaxation can upgrade to The Westin Riverfront Green Spa Package, which includes all of the above, plus a $150 credit to Spa Anjali and a stainless steel Spa Anjali water bottle. Rates for The Westin Riverfront Green Spa Package start at $199 per night. A three night minimum stay is required on both packages and certain restrictions apply. To book, please visit www.westinriverfrontavon.com.

What to fear in Denver?

I just have to share this silly article from the current issue of Westword that pokes fun at the Mile High City while giving some "pointers" to TV show host Joe Rogan of "Fear Factor."

Denver's Giggling Green Bean store

I will be adding the Giggling Green Bean to the pages of my next edition of the Moon Denver guidebook. This adorable baby store in the Highlands emphasizes organic and eco-friendly clothes, toys, books, diapers and more for little ones with the motto, "Healthy Baby. Healthy Planet." For now, find their hours and address at www.giggling-green-bean.com. Even if you aren't a sling-wearing, clothe-diapering mama, there is just cute stuff here if you are headed to a baby shower or expecting.

Denver on Huffington Post

Life in the journalism world is changing (falling apart?) so fast that I don't know whether this link, http://www.huffingtonpost.com/denver/, should go under the "Internet Resources" part of my Moon Denver guidebook or "Newspapers and Periodicals" on page 217. Either way, it's good for Denver that the Huffington Post has a page devoted to news of the Mile High City and elsewhere in Colorado, along with New York and Chicago. It's not like this will or should replace the Denver Post anytime soon, but nice to see additional coverage of local news.

Denver's Delish Demure

I usually don't mention places on this blog unless I've had a chance to visit personally, but I heard about this new fashion boutique on the Denveralamode.com site and it looks too cute. Go to www.delishdemure.com and see the very stylish clothes they have, plus learn about their cool Sept. 26 fall fashion show and event--free, though there are $50 VIP tickets. This would go in the "Greater Denver" area of my Moon Denver guidebook since it's as far south as Greenwood Village but maybe the whole area will be neighborhood gem I've previously overlooked.

Free cupcakes in Denver!

Just this month I posted about a new sweet shop in Denver that will be added to my next edition of my Moon Denver guidebook. Now I'm thrilled to share that Living the Sweet Life will be giving away delicious goodies at their grand opening this weekend--I will be there! Go to www.thesweetlifedenver.com to get hours and location, or just call in for a cupcake delivery sometime.

It's time for Denver Beer Fest!

I wrote about the biggest convention in the country devoted to beer on page 102 in my Moon Denver guidebook, The Great American Beer Festival which comes to town every October. To kick things off this year is a "citywide celebration of all things beer" because you just can't have too much of a good thing (like chocolate, beer...). The festival goes for nearly 10 days until the sold-out GABF begins. Go to www.denverbeerfest.com to find out about beer-pairing dinners, beer tastings, beer tours, beer trivia (and prizes!) as well as the 40th annual Oktoberfest celebration. The list of possibilities is truly creative and silly and good fun. Looks like this will become an annual event too.

New Denveralamode.com

On page 121 of my Moon Denver guidebook is a list of Internet Resources for locals and travelers alike, and now I have another one to include. The entrepreneurial spirit has surface in another former Rocky Mountain News staffer (the almost 150-year old newspaper folded earlier this year, as I wrote about on this blog), this time it's Lesley Kennedy with www.denveralamode.com. It's a weekly email and website--the emails come as "the Sundae Scoop"--that follows Denver area (and beyond, she's currently at NY Fashion Week) fashion happenings. For example, what were the kids wearing at the Monolith Festival at Red Rocks this summer?

Denver guidebook adds Wide Open Adventure

In the next edition of my Moon Denver guidebook I will be sure to add Wide Open Adventure, www.wideopenadventure.com, as a resource in the Arts & Leisure chapter. Even for those of us who live in the Mile High City, it can be worthwhile to hire an expert for those more challenging outings up in the mountains. A bonus for tourists is the fact that the company will pick them up at their hotel and then return them post-adventure! Whatever your interest--fly fishing, whitewater rafting, snowshoeing St. Mary's Glacier, rock climbing or mountain biking, Wide Open Adventure can provide an experienced guide for you.

Denver guidebook update

On page 145 of my Moon Denver guidebook I wrote about how the old Gates Rubber Plant was "on the verge" of becoming the Mile High City's latest infill project. According to an article in yesterday's Denver Post, the plans are now on indefinite hold thanks to the struggling economy:

http://www.denverpost.com/search/ci_13320307

Denver guidebook: new sweet shop!

I'll be putting Living the Sweet Life in the next edition of my Moon Denver guidebook. This sweet tooth's dream just opened up a few weeks ago (in the Highlands neighborhood next to Masterpiece Deli, page 52 of my Denver guidebook) and I'm already hoping that they expand their hours. It's a mix of crazy good cupcakes, cookies and even candy. To see mouth-watering photos of their delights and learn more, go to www.thesweetlifedenver.com.

Denver guidebook on Frontier Airlines

I wrote about Denver's hometown airline, Frontier, on page 208 of my Moon Denver guidebook. This year the struggling airline (is there one that isn't?!) was sold. Today's Denver Post has an article on why Coloradans love Frontier and want it to stay the same:

Denver guidebook add: Highland Haven Creekside Inn

I will be adding Evergreen's Highland Haven to the next edition of my Moon Denver guidebook, and let me tell you why:

Last night I was treated to tours of the cozy cottages and suites at Highland Haven that feel like light years from the Mile High City, but are less than an hour's drive from downtown. I had not heard of this place when I was writing my Denver guidebook, or I surely would have included it in the Greater Denver Hotels listings. Honestly, I just don't know Evergreen that well but now I know exactly who I would turn to for that insider advice--the dedicated owners of this charming bed & breakfast. There are cottages intimate and private enough for a honeymoon and suites large enough for corporate retreats. The food was tasty, and in warmer months the patio is the place to sit and listen to the creek and quaking aspens. But wait, there's more! In 2010 they will debut a unique "treehouse" amidst the cottages--an elevated two-story 850-sq. ft. cabin between two large spruce trees. The treehouse will be built from sustainable materials and additional information can be found on their site, www.highlandhaven.com.

To be that close to Denver, that comfortable and well-appointed and be able to look at the stars...pretty special!

Denver's Oxford Hotel deal

I wrote about Denver' Oxford Hotel on page 154 of my Moon Denver guidebook, and now here is a chance for Colorado residents to get a killer deal this fall at one of the Mile High City's most perfectly upgraded historic hotels:

Denver’s historic Oxford Hotel is pleased to help support this year’s One Book, One Denver program by offering a discounted weekend rate of $79 to all Colorado residents this fall, with 20 percent of that rate to be donated to purchase more copies of this year’s selection, To Kill a Mockingbird.

In celebration of Denver’s “citywide book club,” The Oxford Hotel and the Denver Office of Cultural Affairs – with the help of students from Denver’s East High School – have decorated a large picture window overlooking 17th Street with 1,000 Origami birds and images of the book. A unique sound art installation by renowned artist Jim Green reads passages of the book aloud whenever someone sits on the bench under the display window. Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper officially unveiled the window at a ceremony at The Oxford Hotel this morning.

The Oxford’s One Book, One Denver room rate is $79 per night, 20 percent of which will be donated to the program to be used to purchase books for Denver’s Public Library system. All books will be donated to Denver Public Schools following the promotion. To book the One Book, One Denver room rate at The Oxford Hotel, please phone (800) 228-5838, or visit www.theoxfordhotel.com. The special rate is valid for stays Friday-Sunday nights through Dec. 30, 2009, based on availability.

The goal of One Book, One Denver is to encourage Denver citizens to join in the shared experience of simultaneously reading the same book and participating in a wide variety of fun events and activities. The program – and the Oxford Hotel display window – will run through the end of October. For more information, please visit www.denvergov.org/onebook/.

The renowned Oxford Hotel has played a central part in Denver’s colorful past since 1891. The hotel recently completed an extensive renovation, including a new cutting edge technology system. New in-room amenities include flat screen TVs, complimentary wireless and wired high-speed internet service and Bose Wave radios with iPod docking stations. Interior upgrades include elegant new carpeting, wall treatments and draperies, as well as luxurious pillow top mattresses and bedding.

Denver's LoHi Steakhouse

I'm a proud resident of Denver's Highlands neighborhood as you may know from reading my Moon Denver guidebook. I'll be adding a new restaurant in my neighborhood to the next edition of my Denver guidebook. Tonight I had a chance to try the relatively new LoHi Steakhouse at 32nd & Tejon. I am so thrilled with the rehab inside and out on this place that I'd just about recommend it on that alone. The food is pretty basic--steaks (of course), burgers, sandwiches with dinner, lunch and brunch all served here depending on the day of the week. But it was a decent meal and if I'd had more time, I would have stayed for a chocolate pudding dessert that sounded scrumptious. My only complaint would be the way too loud music. Now I understand why the patio is always so crowded! You can probably hear each other out there. Still, the place was pretty packed with pretty people all enjoying a drink and a bite on a late summer Wednesday night. Insider tip: They also offer Little Man Ice Cream from the nearby ice cream "can" on their dessert menu.

Denver weekend: yoga and shopping

This weekend I lucked out into a little "me" time and took full advantage of it! First, I went to Kriya Yoga (see page 121 of my Moon Denver guidebook) in the Highlands for some much needed breathing and stretching in a Hatha style class. From there, I checked out a new shop called Uncommon Threads--a denim store in the heart of Highlands Square. The salesclerk was very attentive and nice, even when I didn't find the perfect pair of jeans for me. David Khan mean anything to people out there? Never heard of that designer but liked those the most. Lots to choose from for men and women. I'll be adding Uncommon Threads to the next edition of my Moon Denver guidebook.

Denver's BEST new restaurant

The Squeaky Bean restaurant did not open until 2009 so it obviously was not included in the pages of my Moon Denver guidebook. However, that is the purpose of this blog and I am thrilled to share the news! I must confess that I walk and drive by this place almost daily and it took me months to go in. I hope others won't also be deterred by mistakenly thinking it's a coffee shop. It used to be a coffee shop--two different ones, in fact--but now it is a fabulous, smart restaurant with a seasonal menu. Last night I ate--or gobbled:)--the freshest rice/squash/pine nut//too many other tasty things salad for dinner, along with a scrumptious beet salad. I asked my husband how his shrimp BLT was, but he couldn't answer in the midst of chewing, licking his fingers, etc. The owner--an experienced Denver restauranteur--has leased land out back and is growing much of the produce himself in tidy large raised garden beds--arugula, tomatoes, herbs.

See the latest menu at www.squeakybean.net or just go to 33rd & Tejon because they have a breakfast, lunch, brunch and dinner menu as well as a fully stocked bar.

Denver's art museum powwow

I thought I knew about all of the local powwows, but I left this out of my Moon Denver guidebook. Don't you miss it too:

On Saturday, September 12, Acoma Plaza will be alive with the music and color of the 20th Annual Denver Art Museum Friendship Powwow & American Indian Cultural Celebration. The free event will begin at 10 a.m. with Gourd Dancing, followed by the grand entry at noon. Dance contests include categories ranging from tiny tot to adult. Artmaking on the plaza will include clay activities, animal painting and photo memories. Experience the sights and sounds of living traditions, connect with working artists and artisans, shop vendors for American Indian jewelry and other great items and enjoy your first (or 101st) piece of fry bread! Powwow activities and Museum admission are free.

Denver's got the best trails parks

I wrote a lot about Denver's fabulous parks and trails in my Moon Denver guidebook and now they've been recognized as the best in the country:

The July 2009 edition of Parks and Recreation, the official publication of the National Recreation and Parks Association, has named Denver as Best Trail Parks in the United States. The honor comes during National Parks and Recreation month.

“If a city is a great tourist destination, you want its parks to be a part of that,” says Peter Harnik, director of the Trust for Public Land’s Center for City Park Excellence in the article. “Parks have so many components, and people love parks for so many different reasons. From natural ambiance to recreational opportunities to the unexpected things that just happen there when strangers interact.”

Denver has one of the biggest biking, hiking and jogging trail systems in the nation, a network of 100 miles of paved, off-road trails that cross the City. The paved bike trails connect to hundreds of additional miles of dirt trails, many of which head up into the mountains and offer mountain biking adventures and scenic views. (from www.denvergov.org)

Denver's Hotel Monaco "Urban Fix" package

I wrote about the Hotel Monaco in my Moon Denver guidebook, and they are now offering a deal through the end of 2009:

You tell me about Denver's no TV bars

I posted this earlier this month:

I was chatting with Matt of the Wynkoop Brewing Company about which bars in town do not have TVs. Fantastic idea for a "call-out" in my next edition! We came up with My Brother's Bar, the Cruise Room... (Swimclub 32, alas RIP) and now I need to work on that list. Of course Wynkoop has TVs aplenty, but Matt guessed there are a mere 4 TV-less bars in the Mile High City and I think there must be more.

Click on the comments box below and I'll post all of the answers as a separate post soon!

Denver's Sports Plus

This is one of those tips I'm almost reluctant to share in my next Moon Denver guidebook because I want to keep it for myself! The best deal on quality used (and some new) sports equipment is at Sports Plus on South Gaylord Street in the Washington Park neighborhood. Last winter my husband got skis, helmet, poles and goggles for our toddler for $50 TOTAL. Now we're onto a cute bike with training wheels. It's for all ages and all seasons and the used merchandise that they offer is in good shape. I'm over Craigslist and this is a perfect way to support a local business instead.

Denver Center for the Performing Arts subscriptions

Although I included all of the theaters within the Denver Center for the Performing Arts in the Arts & Leisure chapter of my Moon Denver guidebook, I did not tell readers about the subscriptions. Anyone can subscribe to Denver Center Attractions (Broadway shows and musicals) and/or Denver Center Theatre Company (local productions) to get ticket discounts, advance notice, great seats and more! A great way to save yourself a few dollars and still support the arts. And they get some fantastic shows here--I recently saw "August" Osage County" and it was splendid. I had a friend who when she had a really fabulous night out would often say, "I feel like I'm not in Denver in anymore!" as if this were the highest compliment. But I know what she means in that a night of good theatre can transport you from your own reality for a time.

Denver area Bear Creek Lake

In my next edition of my Moon Denver guidebook, I will be sure to include Bear Creek Lake of nearby Lakewood in my Arts & Leisure chapter for swimming, boating, fishing, camping and picnicking. I have driven past this recreation area many times and thought it lacked appeal given its proximity to a highway. However, a friend convinced me to go last week and I really liked how close it was to the city but still felt like a nature experience for the day. Thick old cottonwood groves away from the highway make for shaded picnic areas, a visitor center includes wildlife displays (read: taxidermy) and three lakes/reservoirs offers different amenities which keep swimmers and boaters at a safe distance. It is considerably closer than Chatfield or Barr Lake, which I included in my first edition of my Moon Denver guidebook.

Denver's Colorado History Museum details

This was posted as a comment to my Moon Denver guidebook updates and I felt it should be shared with my readers:

The good news is that the History Colorado Center is being built at 12th and Broadway, just one block south of the current Colorado History Museum. The 2011 date is the expected move in time frame for staff, and then new exhibitions will go under construction. We'll use the interim to take stock of our collections, plan and develop exhibitions, and really examine all the ways to leverage the History Colorado Center into not just an incredible new museum, but a meaningful resource for educators, residents and tourists across the state. A hub for history, so to speak. It should be an exciting process, and I'll keep you updated. The groundbreaking for the new History Colorado Center is August 19th (two weeks!). You and Moon Denver fans are certainly welcome to attend the ceremony!
Best, Rebecca Laurie

Denver airport going solar?

On pages 208-209 of my Moon Denver guidebook I wrote about Denver International Airport--from its design to the airlines that serve it--but I just saw on the Huffington Post an article about the airport's efforts to go solar:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/08/19/dia-proposes-7-million-do_n_263447.html

Seems like a good idea, especially when you consider the carbon footprint of air travel. I'll keep an eye on this issue and provide the latest details in my next edition as well on this blog.

Denver guidebook in Denver Post

My Moon Denver guidebook got a nice little mention in yesterday's Denver Post:

http://www.denverpost.com/travel/ci_13055111

Of course I do live in Denver and do maintain this blog to keep my book from being outdated from the time it was researched at much as possible. Thrilling to see the lovely cover there on the printed page!

Denver's no TV bars?

Last night at my most wonderful Moon Denver guidebook launch party, I was chatting with Matt of the Wynkoop Brewing Company about which bars in town do not have TVs. Fantastic idea for a "call-out" in my next edition! We came up with My Brother's Bar, the Cruise Room... (Swimclub 32, alas RIP) and now I need to work on that list. Denver's Colorado History Museum changes & FREE

On page 25 of my Moon Denver guidebook I wrote about the Colorado History Museum--its many exhibits and special events. Well, the good news is that admission to the museum is FREE as of Aug. 1, 2009 through spring 2010 (March 28, 2010, I believe) when the current exhibit, Allen True's West ends. The not so good news is that after that date the Colorado History Museum will close completely until they relocate and open in maybe late 2011!! I will stay on top of getting more specific dates and where this new location will be, but for now those are the only details I have. Enjoy the free admission though.

Denver airport taxi fees going up

On page 209 of my Moon Denver guidebook I noted the flat fares of taxis to and from Denver International Airport, but unfortunately I have to report that those rates are on the rise. According to an article in today's Denver Post, non-metered rates to/from the airport will be changing as follows:
going from $43 to $51 for trips from DIA to downtown or vs.
going from $70 to $84 for trips from DIA to Boulder or vs.
going from $45 to $57 for trips from DIA to the Tech Center or vs.

Ouch! Folks, the bus is cheaper by far.

Denver's dinosaur ridge

I left out the tourist attraction of Dinosaur Ridge in my Moon Denver guidebook because I just never take anyone there. I'm still on the fence about it adding it to my next edition. I took my daughter there this month because it was on our way home from a hike in the foothills and she has developed an interest in dinosaurs. On a weekday, the parking lot was full and business was booming inside the gift shop and new exhibit. We took the $3 guided tour rather than walk up the steep hillside to see the dinosaur footprints, dinosaur bones (not like what you see in a museum at all, just smooth surfaces imbedded in rock) and such. Personally, I love learning about the history of the rocks and the land but the gift shop is turnoff. The new exhibit looks pretty good, like a mini-Denver Museum of Nature & Science. I can't imagine doing that on a hot day or being self-guided ever given how subtle the remains are. It was as much a history of man's follies with such artifacts as anything else. Hmmm, any comments on this one?

Win a Denver guidebook or other Moon book

Here is a link, http://www.moon.com/blogs/moon-staff/tell-us-what-s-your-favorite-us-city.

I recently wrote a blog post to be added to the Moon.com site about my favorite city, Boulder. I included Boulder in the Excursions chapter of my Moon Denver guidebook and my blog post was more of a love letter to the town where I did most of my growing up. Truly, now that I take my daughter to play and enjoy Boulder, I really appreciate it so much more than I did when I was a kid. Anyway, my post and others are part of a promotion to give away Moon books this summer so act fast to get 1 of 50 books!

Moon Denver guidebook at conference

I will be speaking about my Moon Denver guidebook at The Ultimate Travel Writer’s Workshop July 23-25. It’s sponsored by AWAI (American Writers & Artists Inc.) and here is a link with details, http://www.thetravelwriterslife.com/tww/denver09/

I will bring a few copies of my book to sell directly as well.

Denver restaurant bargains

Here is a link to a $25/3-course dining deal at some fantastic Denver restaurants this month, including Duo which was included in my Moon Denver guidebook and Root Down, which will be in the next edition.

Denver's Buchi Cafe Cubano gets thumbs up!

Although they opened just after my Moon Denver guidebook was completed in 2008, I've already written on this blog about Buchi Cafe Cubano and how I will definitely be including this gem of a restaurant/coffee shop in my next edition. This week the restaurant received a rave review from Westword:

http://www.westword.com/2009-07-16/restaurants/buchi-caf-cubano-offers-an-authentic-taste-of-cuba-and-a-great-cup-of-coffee/

Note that they just got a liquor license and hours will change for all of us rum drinkers out there. Yum!

And today is Third Thursdays, when a portion of the day's proceeds are donated to local schools. Don't miss it!

True Denver experience

I just have to share this real experience that could have been taken directly from the pages of my Moon Denver guidebook. Instead, it's from a Denver Mom enjoying the Mile High City with her family this summer (she originally posted this on an online community parent message board):
Hi guys -

On Friday my husband and I took our kids to the Denver Art Museum. Prior to going to the museum we went to Mad Greens (across the courtyard from the museum entrance). They have great salads and a Wine and Cheese bar. Our kids loved eating from the cheese plate, we had a great salad, cheese and a glass of wine and then we walked around the art museum. They have some really cool kids activities in the museum including this fun light bubble feature where the kids can "pop" light bubbles on the floor and the more they pop the more art on the wall is displayed.

It was a really fun night for the whole family!

Denver's Confluence Kayaks moved!

But just down the street. That's right, don't go looking for Confluence Kayaks at the intersection of 16th and Platte Sts. because it's now down below the Vitamin Cottage at 15th and Platte Sts. Not sure what's happening with the historic building they called home for so many years, but the new space is inviting and just as close to the kayak action on the South Platte River. I'll add a new address as soon as I get one.

Denver's Hotel Teatro makes list

I knew the Hotel Teatro was a special place and said so on page 154 of my Moon Denver guidebook. But now Hotel Teatro has been named one of the top leisure hotels by Travel + Leisure Magazine--the only one in Colorado to make the list. So, check it out and see what makes it so fabulous and leisurely.

Denver area Splash!

We had such a fun time yesterday at the Splash Aquatics Park that I wrote about on page 116 of my Moon Denver guidebook. I write this for two reasons:

1. To let my readers know that I included places and things to do in my Denver guidebook that I truly do enjoy myself! And yes, as I said, it was jammed full on a summer day. Still, that wild, screaming--splashing!--was what made it fun. We had my daughter's birthday party there and I loved not cleaning my own house before or after a party, then going out for ice cream in downtown Golden later.

2. The full name is The Splash at Fossil Trace Aquatics Park, so perhaps I need to make that change in my next edition. Also, if you miss the turn off, it's a long way back around to the entrance following the little blue signs.

Colorado Springs deals

How about free? I wrote about Colorado Springs in the Excursions chapter of my Moon Denver guidebook and like many places, they are offering deals this summer. Click on this link to enter a free family vacation sweepstakes, http://www.experiencecoloradosprings.com/family-fun-sweepstakes.html

Or go here, www.VisitCOS.com, and click on "Savings with Altitude"to find an array of coupons for use at Colorado Springs businesses. Save, save, save!

Denver area Mt. Falcon hike

A big thanks to my cousin for taking me and my daughter on a fantastic hike today! And so close to Denver. I will definitely be adding the Mount Falcon area to the next edition of my Moon Denver guidebook, but here is a link for anyone who wants a jump on it:
http://www.co.jefferson.co.us/openspace/openspace_T56_R16.htm

The views, oh the views. And easy trails too. I saw people pushing strollers along one trail. Also popular with mountain bikers. A clean bathroom, shaded picnic tables and breathtaking scenery. A wonderful Colorado day!

Camping near Denver

I'm finding out the hard way that people need to make reservations well in advance if they want to camp in the mountains during summer. I don't think I emphasized this point enough--or at all--in my Moon Denver guidebook. Of course there is the wonderful and useful Moon Colorado Camping book to refer to for such needs, but I feel it will be helpful to my own readers to know more about this process. Six months ago I didn't know I wanted to take my daughter camping for her July birthday and now weekends are booked just about everywhere and first come first serve spots aren't the right option for us. So, plan ahead!

Don't miss Devil's Thumb Ranch

On page 190 of my Moon Denver guidebook I wrote about Devil's Thumb Ranch for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing and mentioned their upgrades. Oh my goodness, I had no idea how fabulous the changes were until I spent a night up there in June. Ordinarily I am not exactly open to change and tend to like things to remain the same. But that would be so wrong in this case because the changes are just so SMART. Geo-thermal heating, beetle-kill wood paneling, organic and sustainable farm menu items...I think someone threw out the term "sustainable luxury" and I'm ready to embrace it with a big bear hug. The spa, ooh-la-la, get a hot towel massage, though I heard the Field O'Greens facial was good too. This is also a summer destination now with horseback riding and hikes, or just relaxing and watching the hummingbirds flit about. I swear I was e-mailing my sister from my cozy lodge room with a fireplace about how she needed to call reservations for a cabin immediately. Those cabins--with actual wood-burning stoves--are ideal for family get togethers (all together, with a little separate space). I could go on and on, but I have to save something for the next edition of Moon Denver.

Denver area Barr Lake

I can only blame the crush of deadline--again!--for how I included Barr Lake in my Moon Denver guidebook. On page 117, I wrote about ice fishing on Barr Lake and on page 118 I wrote about bird watching at Barr Lake. We had a marvelous time out there today on our canoe and there were lots of other people boating and fishing too. My point is, next time I need to find a way to write about all of the seasonal options for one location! Last year we went to Barr Lake in very late summer when the water was low enough to create sandbars and beaches (though wading and swimming are prohibited), but with all our rain this year there was no sand and extra lake areas to explore and listen to the birds.

Estes Park guidebook updates

I did not post on this blog yesterday because I was too busy thoroughly enjoying a day in Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park. I wrote about RMNP on pages 177-181 of my Moon Denver guidebook, but the truth is that I had to rely on memories of going up there while on deadline and not my freshest research. Well, one discovery from yesterday was the River Song B & B off of St. Mary's Lake road. There is a porch swing hanging from a large tree branch with about the best view of the park from anywhere! Nice, quiet spot to stay too so I'll be adding it to my next edition. I neglected to mention that the stretch of hike from the Bear Lake Trailhead (after a few minutes on the trail my daughter said, "I thought there would be heads." Then I had to explain what a "trailhead" is.) to Nymph Lake is paved with asphalt. This doesn't mean it's a wheelchair ramp type of trail, just was heavily used. Anyway, I still recommend that hike because it is a good one with little kids or people who are not able to hike very far. A little shop, "Blue Skies and Dragonflies" looked to have the same crafts as every third shop on the main drag, but check it out for how it's built right up to (into?) the rock. The riverwalk was really nice, especially with shade around the waterwheel. The wildflowers were AMAZING!!!

Denver youth swim free

On page 116 of my Moon Denver guidebook I noted that in 2008 Mayor Hickenlooper announced free swimming pool access for all Denver youth, 17 and under. With the economy struggling, it didn't look like that would happen again this year. But good news! Kaiser offered $150K, which will supplement any lost fees. The free program goes from June 27 through Aug. 15, 2009. I know this means we will be frequenting the pools more often, on days when we are not at swim class.

Kids free on Denver light rail

On page 210 of my Moon Denver guidebook I wrote about the Denver light rail trains that currently provide service from downtown to the suburbs, with a few stops to great neighborhoods along the way. What I didn't know at the time was that kids under 5 ride free on the light rail. I'll look into whether this is also the case on RTD buses, but I suspect it is the same. What a deal! My daughter and I took the light rail to the South Pearl Street Farmers' Market this morning and she loved the train ride. It was a cheap thrill, as they say! Unfortunately, the "farmers' market" that I also wrote about on page 140 of my Moon Denver guidebook was not as I remembered (or described in my book). There was barely any produce and I am not convinced they were even farmers since half their produce was from the grocery store (with stickers!). I would still recommend it, but it is a street fair with goods from some of the local shops for sale.

Back in Denver

I've just returned from a wonderful summer vacation to my husband's hometown in Wisconsin. While the vacation was idyllic, I didn't realize how much I'd missed Denver until driving in from DIA and taking in the full wide open sky. I neglected to mention this in my Moon Denver guidebook, the wide open skies of the West. I think that I was just taking them for granted, thinking of wide open sky of Wyoming, but I was really astonished at those amazing horizon lines, the clear blue skies and the fresh, dry air. Aaah, home!

Denver deals at CHM

My Moon Denver guidebook included the Colorado History Museum on page 25. For $52.80 they have a Father's Day special that will buy a pass good for other historical sites around the state for the rest of 2009. Quite a bargain for history buffs!

Central City Opera opens in June!

On pages 175-176 of my Moon Denver guidebook I wrote about the Central City Opera House and I just wanted to give a heads up that opera season begins June 27 and goes through August 2. The 2009 season includes "Lucia di Lammermoor," "A Little Night Music" and "Rinaldo" for both matinee and evening shows. Look for discounts on large groups and other deals.

NEW!...Denver's Primebar

This evening I had a chance to enjoy the grand opening of PrimeBar in downtown Denver. I will certainly be included this new hotspot in the next edition of my Moon Denver handbook. The restaurant/bar is right on the 16th Street Mall at Arapahoe Street and I swear the interior stretches for a whole block! The outdoor patio with hip couches and tables was full even on a rainy, warm spring night. Over the bars are huge tvs, but you can also find booths away from the screens. The menu has something for everyone--with upscale apps and large entrees that include steak, pasta, "two-handed sandwiches" and what I might call "don't be shy" desserts. Go to www.primebaramerica.com for hours and directions.

NEW!...Larkburger in Boulder

In the Excursions chapter of my Moon Denver guidebook I wrote about Larkburger in Edwards, not far from Vail. The good news is that Boulder and Denver residents have a much shorter drive to get their truffle-parmesan fry fix! Larkburger opened in Boulder less than a year ago and business is booming--or at least it appeared to be the couple of times I was there recently. Fun fact: their disposable utensils are made from potatoes. Somehow. How cool is that?

Denver comments, please!

I would appreciate any and all feedback about my Moon Denver guidebook and this blog. The way it is setup only allows new comments to my posts, so please use this post as a place for those comments on any topic. Favorite restaurant not in the book? Tell me about it! New shop opened up? I want to know! Something I suggested fell short of expectations? I'm all ears! I hope that sometime this year I can also host a contest on this blog and giveaway a copy of my Denver guidebook to one of my blog visitors and/or readers. Details to come.

GONE!...Via Trattoria

On page 46 of my Moon Denver guidebook I wrote about Via Trattoria & Bar in LoDo as an alternative to the many brewpubs in the neighborhood. I'll be on the hunt for a new wine bar since Via Trattoria is closed for good, but I will keep readers posted on the results of my search. I did hear about a place in Larimer Square...

Denver's own Kevin Taylor's at the Opera House

I'm sorry to say I made a mistake in my first edition Moon Denver guidebook. I should have included Kevin Taylor's at the Opera House, which is a sprawling restaurant underneath the Ellie Caulkins Opera House at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts. The restaurant is only open for pre-theater cocktails and dinner on show nights for the Buell Theatre, Ellie Caulkins Opera House and Boettcher Concert Hall. I will certainly include this restaurant in my next edition!

A Bronx Tale in Denver

Of course I mentioned the Ellie Caulkins Opera House on page 93 of my Moon Denver guidebook, but the other night I had a chance to enjoy the incredible Chazz Palmintieri in his own "A Bronx Tale" in this spectacular theater. I don't think there is a bad seat in the house! If you get chance, the show is on through June 21, 2009. It's nothing like the movie as Mr. Palmintieri plays all the "parts" in a 1.5-hour monologue of sorts. Really a fabulous evening in a special theater.

Denver's Tocabe restaurant

Opened well after I completed my Moon Denver guidebook, Tocabe is Denver's first and only Native American fare restaurant. I keep hearing great things about it and can't wait to try it myself soon. It's set up like a Chipotle or the like, where diners order the basic and the sides before finding a table at this casual eatery. The basics include Native American staple fry bread, pinto beans and are enhanced by more HIspanic flavors with salsa sides. It's in the Highlands neighborhood and becoming a local favorite.

Denver spa and dine

I did write about the Woodhouse Day Spa on page 137 of my Moon Denver guidebook, but what I just learned is that while getting treatments you can also order food from local restaurants. How about that pedicure while enjoying a nibble of something from D-Bar Desserts (page 149 of my Denver guidebook)? Sounds like a mini-staycation to me...

Denver's Little Man Ice Cream

People are as picky about their ice cream as they are about their beer. I've decided that I will most definitely add Little Man Ice Cream to my next edition of my Moon Denver guidebook. You can't miss Little Man if you come over the 16th Street Pedestrian Bridge into the Highlands neighborhood, where this oversized replica of an old-fashioned milk can attracts ice cream lovers year-round. The location is awesome directly across the street from Hirshorn Park and playground, around the corner from Vita Restaurant, down the street from Z Cuisine. I like Little Man for many reasons, but confess they are not my #1 favorite ice cream. However, there are many people who put it at the top of their list and that's why I'm adding it to mine--and maybe yours too!

Denver planner

While writing my Moon Denver guidebook, I learned more about the women who have made a difference in the Mile High City. Dana Crawford comes to mind. Here is a link to a Denver Post article, http://www.denverpost.com/business/ci_12533437, about Tami Door and her work with Downtown Denver Partnership to make the city sparkle.

Denver's Colorado History Museum

Kids 12 and under are free on Saturdays at the Colorado History Museum! Either this is new or I was unaware of it when I wrote about the Colorado History Museum on page 25 of my Moon Denver guidebook. Activities for all ages are available on Saturdays from 11-3. Be sure to check their site, www.coloradohistory.org, to find out about the many programs going on each week.

Denver guidebook & Pikes Peak concert

I wrote about the many ways to visit Pikes Peak on page 185 of my Moon Denver guidebook, but I did not mention that there is the occasional rock concert at the top. OK, maybe it's a one-time event for a good charity, http://www.denverpost.com/ci_12528154 or a new trend?

Moon Denver guidebook in Westword

Be sure to pick up the shiny & new Westword 2009 summer guide that features a lovely article on none other than my Moon Denver guidebook and a mention of this little blog! I sure appreciate it and hope lots of folks see it soon.

Rocky Mountain National Park Free Days!

Awesome news from the Interior Department--3 free weekends at national parks this summer. That means that Rocky Mountain National Park, which I wrote about in the Excursions chapter of my Moon Denver guidebook, will be free on the following dates:
June 20 & 21, July 18 & 19, Aug. 15 & 16. The idea is to get visitors to spend their savings nearby so check out the Estes Park restaurants, hotels and shops in my Moon Denver guidebook as well.

Denver neighborhood gets nod

Oh, and it's my very own neighborhood too! This Men's Journal article, http://www.mensjournal.com/the-best-nabes-central, talks about what makes the East Highlands (also called LoHi) area so fabulous--the restaurants, the pedestrian access to so much culture, nature, community! I of course included the greater Highlands neighborhood in my Moon Denver guidebook. Glad I'm not alone in my appreciation of the 'hood.

Denver chefs chit-chat

Check out this link, http://ow.ly/aDoY, to hear what some of Denver's top chefs say about the Mile High dining scene. In my Moon Denver guidebook I included Elway's, Zengo, Steuben's and Vesta and now you can get to know their owners and chefs a little better. If the link does not work, you might also find it on www.denver.org, the Visit Denver site.

Denver guidebook music festival updates

In my Moon Denver guidebook--on page 193 of the "Excursions" chapter--I wrote about the various music festivals that take place during the summer. I've just received some handy updates from the Colorado Music Alliance, www.coloradomusicalliance.com, and while some of the festivals that they include are beyond the scope of my Denver guidebook you are sure to find fabulous concerts to attend statewide. The Colorado Music Festival in Boulder begins June 27 and runs through August 7; Bravo! Vail Valley Music Festival is from July 1--Aug. 4; Central City Opera will be from June 27-August 2.

Denver Civic Theatre confusion

I wrote about the Denver Civic Theatre on page 93 of my Moon Denver guidebook, but according to an article in today's Denver Post the theatre may be closed--temporarily, we hope--until July 6 at least. It doesn't sound good with power being shut off too. So if you're headed out for a show, don't be shocked when there is no answer or updated info. on their site.

Denver's Kirkland Museum party

I love the Kirkland Museum and of course wrote about the fabulous fine & decorative arts museum on page 88 of my Moon Denver guidebook. Order your tickets now at, http://store.historicdenver.org/store/memberships/summer-of-modernism-/ , to attend their June 4 "Summer of Modernism Kick-off Party" from 5:30-7:30 p.m. I for one am curious to find out what a "vintage cocktail lecture" is all about! You can also learn more about the museum's hours and other events at www.kirklandmuseum.org.

Rediscover Denver at a better price

Colorado Governor Bill Ritter announced May would be "Rediscover Colorado" month as a way to encourage people to spend more money on going out and jump starting the economy. The incentive is BARGAINS. The Brown Palace, which was included on page 13 and page 149 of my Moon Denver guidebook is now offering room rates as low as $117 a night. Check their site, www.brownpalace.com, to find out about other deals at the hotel this spring and summer.

Guidebooks rule!

As much as I enjoy writing this blog to supplement my Moon Denver guidebook research, here is an article that reinforces the need for people to buy the actual book (or any travel book, for that matter):
http://www.jaunted.com/story/2009/5/26/124445/128/travel/Technology+Gets+Smacked+Down+by+Old-School+Guidebook+in+Moscow
Granted, Denver may have more technological advances than Moscow but the part about being disconnected from those around you rings true.

Dining deals--Zengo and more!

I wrote about Denver's Restaurant Week on page 36 of my Moon Denver guidebook, but what I didn't know then and I will certainly mention in my updated edition is that you should follow them on Twitter to get tweets about the latest restaurant offers. Here is one for Zengo, http://ow.ly/9sM6, a restaurant I included on page 45 of my Moon Denver guidebook. $28 for a 5-course tasting menu?! Am I reading that correctly? Good value.

NEW!...Movies in the Parks

This program is actually in its fourth year, but I neglected to mention it in my Moon Denver guidebook. Each summer, the city of Denver hosts movies in a handful of public parks. The films start at dusk--anywhere from 8:30-9:00 pm--and you can find out the locations and lineup at www.denvergov.org. There are concessions for sale on site. I'll be adding this wonderful free event to my updated edition!

NEW!...Vail's Westin Riverfront

On page 193 of my Moon Denver guidebook I included only a couple of hotels for Vail. I promise you there will be many more selections in my next edition! For now, let me start with the stunning Westin Riverfront (which is technically in Avon, but it's all part of the Vail Valley) at the base of Beaver Creek Mountain. I know, I know, I usually emphasize locally-owned but look at that pool! And then there is the Spa Anjali with their own line of locally-made fantastic-smelling body care products. The stellar guest rooms have the Westin "Heavenly" touch as usual. To learn more or book a reservation, go to www.starwoodhotels.com/westin. The Riverfront Gondola can pick you up for a mountaintop ride right outside the front door to begin your adventure!

Memorial Day at Coors Field

Amazing! The rain stopped just long enough for us to join friends at Coors Field for a baseball game on this Memorial Day. Seats right in the purple Mile High Row too and watched the Colorado Rockies play the L.A. Dodgers. I included Coors Field on page 21 of my Moon Denver guidebook and the Colorado Rockies on page 107. One question: why are the Rockies wearing red caps? I thought the team colors were purple and black?

Denver #1 Real Estate Market

Certainly my hope was that my Moon Denver guidebook would appeal to locals, tourists and those relocating to the Mile High City. So for those relocating, here's a tip. My thanks to Elizabeth Martinez of Your Castle Real Estate who shared with me the news that the Today featured a segment declaring Denver the #1 real estate market in the country to rebound during the recession.

These were the characteristics of a city that could rebound:
1. Job growth
2. Growing population
3. Location with good weather [they don't realize what we went through last month]
4. Lots of first time home buyers
5. No overbuilding of condos or office spaces
6. Vital Downtowns where people can live without a car
7. Well educated population
8. Large numbers of foreclosures early

Vail summer deals

On pages 190-194 of my Moon Denver guidebook I wrote about Vail, which is barely a two-hour drive from downtown Denver. If you're reading through those pages and wondering if you can afford a visit to Vail, go straight to www.vailallthelove.com to look for special deals on lodgings and more this summer. There is a tremendous amount of development going on in this mountain town and a lot of fun, new things to try out.

Moon Denver to be on KEZW!

I'm heading out to my first live radio interview on KEZW 1430 AM today to discuss my Moon Denver guidebook! Not sure what to expect and hoping 10 minutes flies by...UPDATE: It did fly by! My thanks to Rick Crandall for his kind words about the book and making me so at ease.

NEW!...Cafe Buchi

The Highlands neighborhood has another great restaurant, Cafe Buchi! I'm told that "buchi" is Cuban slang for espresso or coffee and they serve it hot and strong here. There are pressed sandwiches--with egg for breakfast and more traditional Cuban ones for lunch. But hold on, did I mention the empanadas? Delicious! My only complaint is more flavors, please. Love the music, neighborhood folks hanging out enjoying the free Wi-fi. Cafe Buchi is on 38th Ave. at Clay St. and I'll definitely be including this eatery in my updated Moon Denver guidebook.

Boulder Creekfest

Although I wrote quite a lot about Boulder in the Excursions chapter of my Moon Denver guidebook, I neglected to include the annual Creekfest. I'm making plans to attend the 3-day festival this coming holiday weekend and am impressed to see just how big it has become with live music throughout each day, special kid and teen activities, food, crafts, it's all there. I think I read something about belly dancers even. Quite the build-up to the annual Bolder Boulder on Monday!

Expedition Health at Denver Museum of Nature & Science

Since writing my Moon Denver guidebook in 2008, the Denver Museum of Nature & Science has opened a significant new exhibit, Expedition Health. I recently had an opportunity to tour the interactive exhibit that allows visitors to choose a personal "guide" (virtual learning companion) and explore five activity areas: Core Exhibition, the BodyTrek Theater, the Summit Science Stage, Biology Base Camp and Tykes Peak. As I noted in my Moon Denver guidebook, Colorado ranks as one of the healthiest states with a low obesity rate. Unfortunately obesity is still increasing in Colorado and Expedition Health gives ordinary people a fun chance to learn about their own health by riding bikes, walking, "hiking" and more.

Moon Denver "review"

The first review of my Moon Denver guidebook was in the Salt Lake Tribune, http://www.sltrib.com/features/ci_12345196, and pretty nice! Short on the reviewing part but I do appreciate the kind words spread to the masses!

classes at Kazoo & Co.

In writing my Moon Denver guidebook, I neglected to mention that Kazoo & Company toystore (which is on page 144 of Moon Denver) also offers classes for different ages and interests. This spring, make a garden stone for Father's Day or this summer learn how to tye-dye a t-shirt--leave the mess at the store!--or do some tornado science. I've already signed up for one...well, I mean, I signed my daughter up!

GONE!...The Alchemist

Well, almost. She is having a fabulous "end of business" sale through the end of May, so check it out. In the brief months since I wrote about The Alchemist on page 137 of my Moon Denver guidebook, the 30-year old business was sold and is now going bye-bye. The new owner fully intended to keep it going but she is engaged and headed to marry in Nova Scotia before resettling in California. See, that is what I love about these local boutiques--I've been in there 3 times this week and heard her tell the story to customers each (that and she has it all on signs taped up to the windows and mirrors!).

Thursday, May 14, 2009

GONE!...Sarah

Voted Best of by Westword and 5280 in 2008, the boutique Sarah is closing up--or maybe already has completely--after just 3 short years in business. I wrote about Sarah on page 132 of my Moon Denver guidebook and was planning a little shopping trip there soon. I'll be on the lookout for other women's boutiques to share in my next edition.

Pome moved

and just across the street! I wrote about the gift shop Pome on page 135 of my Moon Denver guidebook in the "Shops" chapter. Today I stopped by Devil's Food Bakery (page 157 in my Denver guidebook) and was surprised to see a cute stationery shop where Pome was a few months. But no worries--Pome is as cute as ever almost directly across the street. It's maybe even a little bigger and brighter.

Centennial Gardens

On page 19 of my Moon Denver guidebook I wrote about Centennial Gardens and recommended this outpost of the Denver Botanic Gardens as a worthwhile sight. I found out today that Denver Botanic Gardens no longer maintains Centennial Gardens and it is now in the hands of Denver Parks and Recreation. To find out about Centennial's hours or any updates, go to www.denvergov.org/parks instead. I do so love the concept and story behind this garden and hope it continues to be well maintained.

Studio Soma yoga

I didn't have much time for yoga during the writing of my Moon Denver guidebook last year, but since it was completed I had the chance to explore other yoga studios. Studio Soma is close to home here in the Highlands and I will add them to an updated edition of Moon Denver. The studio is surprisingly bright and large--you don't get that from the entrance--and they offer a variety of classes, with monthly specials. First class is free.

Gluten-free at Parisi

If you are concerned about eating wheat or gluten, you can still enjoy pizza. On page 55 of my Moon Denver guidebook, I wrote about Parisi Italian Market & Deli in the northwest Denver Highlands neighborhood. Earlier this year, Parisi began offering gluten-free pizzas too. Although the pizza is cooked in the same ovens as regular pizza, it is on a sheet of paper and never in contact with the same surface.

Vail's Epic Summer package deals!

On pages 190-194 of my Moon Denver guidebook, I wrote about all that Vail has to offer as an excursion from Denver. Families can sign up for four or seven day locally-guided adventure trips that include gondola rides, horseback riding, whitewater rafting, hiking and even shopping. These all-inclusive deals start at $545 for children and $695 for adults. Go to www.vailresorts.com for much more information.

Hike & Bike Tours

On page 221 of my Moon Denver guidebook I wrote about www.greenprintdenver.org, but what I neglected to mention were the "Hike & Bike Tours" that can make locals and tourists alike very green sightseers. You can simply download and print out the various maps to take the free self-guided tours around the city. And each map tells you how many steps or miles you can expect, as well as your carbon offset by not driving.

Red Trolley Happy Hour

Is there not a happy hour at an ice cream shop? Probably not. But Red Trolley Cake & Cone in the Highlands neighborhood takes it up a notch with daily Root Beer Float Happy Hour from 3-6 pm. I wrote about the Red Trolley on page 55 of my Moon Denver guidebook, but at the the time they were so new his tradition was not established. The Root Beer is made of Denver's own Wynkoop Brewing Company root beer and the ice cream is pure goodness and sweetness! Even better: $2 per float.

Thursday, May 7, 2009

GONE!...Closing sale at French Flat

On page 138 of my Moon Denver guidebook I wrote about the French Flat in the Highlands neighborhood. Unfortunately May will be their final month and they are currently having a going-out-of-business sale.

Denver Botanic Gardens construction warning

On this gorgeous spring day I decided to spend my afternoon at the Denver Botanic Gardens (read more about the gardens on pages 27-28 of my Moon Denver guidebook) with my daughter. Whoa! There is a whole lot of construction going on at once there. Honestly, I never had a problem parking in the old lot and am not sure why they need an underground multi-level new parking garage--except maybe during the summer concerts. Anyway, once you get past the tractors, piles of dirt and other unsightly entrance signs, the gardens are in a full, glorious bloom with sweet scents wafting through the air. Don't be scared off by the temporary parking or construction zone uglies--it's still worth a visit.

Only $79 at the Magnolia!

Mother's Day weekend deals at the Magnolia Hotel, which I included on page 152 of my Moon Denver guidebook, with rates as low as $79/night! Enjoy complimentary cookies and milk before bed.

Monday, May 4, 2009

It's now called Visit Denver

One of my most valuable resources when working on my Moon Denver guidebook was the Denver Convention and Visitors Bureau. They have since changed (and shortened!) their name to simply, Visit Denver. Their web site is still www.denver.org, and their walk-in location on the 16th Street Mall is still there. One of the best places for a wide variety of information on the Mile High City for tourists and residents alike.

NEW!...Root Down

This east Highlands restaurant is the hottest place in town right now. The view over downtown to the east is spectacular, the menu theme is locally-sourced ingredients and the vibe is relaxed cool. This former car repair shop is now sleek, though the owners have made the most of the history of the place with staff wearing mechanic-style shirts with their names and other vintage auto touches. Awesome happy hour that can be quite crowded and reservations recommended for dinner any night of the week. They also serve brunch, just weekends I think. I recommend the veggie slider and sweet potato fries!

Saturday, May 2, 2009

GONE!...Swimclub 32

After wrapping up my Moon Denver guidebook in late 2008, I bumped into the owner of Swimclub 32 at a party. He said he was drastically changing the menu at Swimclub, but that only lasted a month or so before the business was sold and completely reinvented (sorry, not a fan of the replacement just yet). Too bad to lose such a swank nightclub in the Highlands and Denver overall. I'll be in the lookout for a bar that can equal the vibe of Swimclub and be included in the next edition of Moon Denver.

First Friday!

Despite cool temps and rain, First Friday Artwalks were jampacked on this first Friday of May--Tennyson Street, Santa Fe Drive and at art galleries all around town people were out sipping wine, enjoying apps and looking at original artwork.

Don't miss Kismet...

like I did! I knew about Kismet before I wrote my Moon Denver guidebook, but somehow it slipped off my radar during writing. Well, I'll be sure to include it in the next edition. This Highlands Square accessories shop has the BEST hats. I just bought a crushable large-brimmed hat to cope with our Mile High sunshine for such a great price. They also have earrings, necklaces, handbags and other who-knew-I-needed-that stuff. Check them out at www.kismetaccessories.com or better yet in person on the corner of 32nd Ave. & Meade St.

GONE!...Buenos Aires Grill

On page 45 of my Moon Denver guidebook I listed Buenos Aires Grill as an Italian restaurant to try in the LoDo neighborhood. Sadly they have gone out of business and the wonderful space has not been leased yet. The overall neighborhood is not great, but it is a special patio and historic building that should be put to some good use.

MCA|Denver website change

In my Moon Denver guidebook I listed the web site for the Museum of Contemporary Art|Denver (page 23) as www.mcartdenver.org and that does still work but it redirects you to www.mcadenver.org.

MCA & The Lab merge--new lectures

The Museum of Contemporary Art|Denver (featured on page 23 of my Moon Denver guidebook) has merged with the Lab, an independent arts workshop space from the suburb of Lakewood. On June 5 they will begin their first collaboration at the Museum: Mixed Taste: Tag Team Lectures on Unrelated Topics. One speaker discusses a topic for 30 minutes, the next speaker does his bit on a completely different topic and then it's opened up to a slightly confusing but definitely interesting Q & A. June 5 will feature Mayor John Hickenlooper & Kirk Johnson of the Denver Museum of Nature & Science, with the topics "Show Tunes & Aquatic Plants." OK, I admit it, now I want to go. For more details, go to www.mcadenver.org.

Cute new shoe store!

I'm so excited to be writing with good news here! Out for a walk today and quick stop at Wen Chocolates (page 143 in Moon Denver guidebook) and I was stopped in my tracks at the sight of some very cute sandals in a shop window. The shop is Sous le Lit, www.souslelit.com, on Platte Street and they had colorful sandals, heels, scarves, jewelry, cards...I came home and checked their website and they have private parties available. Genius--shoe shopping with a little wine, some friends.

GONE!...Savini Shoes

On page 142 in the "Shops" chapter of Moon Denver guidebook, I included Savini shoes of Cherry Creek. It appears they have gone out of business. I heard they moved to the Highlands neighborhood but their site is gone and phone disconnected, no sign of them in the area. Too bad...I wish I knew what happened to them?

GONE!...Santa Fe Tequila Company

On page 41 of my guidebook, Moon Denver, I wrote about the Santa Fe Tequila Company as a restaurant to try. Well, they are already gone. I don't know if they even lasted two years! I think in May I'll be adding a whole lot of new places to check out and add to the next edition of Moon Denver.

Tuesday, April 28, 2009

GONE!....Coppelia's Needlepoint

I was over in Cherry Creek today taking my daughter to a dance class and lo and behold, another "for lease" sign where Coppelia's Needlepoint used to be. I wrote about Coppelia's on page 124 of Moon Denver. No word on whether their wonderful "Knit for the Homeless" will carry on elsewhere as the website has no updates and the phone number is disconnected. Time to go looking for new yarn shops which I've been hearing about.

ooh la la, Teatro!

Last night I was lucky enough to attend the Colorado Tourism Office's annual event at the Hotel Teatro. I included the Hotel Teatro as Denver's best luxury hotel on page 148 of Moon Denver and on page 154 in the "Hotels" chapter listings. They had two beautiful suites opened up for the event last night and if you can afford it, the view from the 8th floor is spectacular to the west. I loved the images of theater productions form year's past at the DCPA next door, especially the epic Tantalus show. Chef and restauranteur Kevin Taylor (his namesake restaurant is included on page 44 of Moon Denver) was there promoting yet another new venue he is opening in Denver this year. I'll be posting those details as soon as I can visit his latest restaurant.

Monday, April 27, 2009

GONE!...Grow

I not only included Grow on page 125 of Moon Denver, but also highlighted them as one of the best in Moon Denver's "Shops" chapter on page 123. Sadly I just received confirmation that they have closed their shop on S. Pearl St. and their web site, www.growgrowgrow.com, is still doing business but it's not clear for how much longer. I do hope they will find a way to start over.

Spring and snow in Denver

We woke up to snow on this late April morning! The moisture is so needed but it was tough to get back out the snowboots and sweaters. Sunday I needed sunscreen and one layer at the park...today a hood and a sense of humor. As I write it's turning to light rain and the plants are bouncing back up.

Sunday, April 26, 2009

GONE!...Aix

So this morning while the owner of Marczyk Fine Foods was helping me load my groceries into my car, I noticed that the French restaurant Aix is gone (it was directly across the street from Marczyk). I included Aix on page 37 of Moon Denver and Marczyk on page 38 of Moon Denver (and unfortunately Marczyk got left out of the index in the back of the book, but it's there on page 38). Marczyk's owner said that the owners of Duo--a fabulous restaurant in my own Highlands neighborhood, which is described on page 54 of Moon Denver--will be opening Olivera soon. I'll be sure to update this book and the next edition of Moon Denver with that listing after I try it out.

Saturday, April 25, 2009

Dragonfly

Oops! How did I neglect to include Dragonfly of Highlands Square in Moon Denver? I love this little boutique with their sexy tops, jeans and dresses. I was just up there browsing and realized that they are now combined with Strut, a fabulous shoe store that I did list in Moon Denver on page 142. Strut moved from their original Tennyson Street location last summer and the blend with Dragonfly is fashion perfection. Find details at www.dragonflydenver.com

Locally-made in Examiner.com

In addition to my work on Moon Denver, I'm also writing a few articles a week for www.examiner.com, with a focus on locally-made everything--furniture, clothing, chocolates and more surprising stuff. Check out the articles, share them with friends. You'd be amazed what cool stuff is made right here in the Mile High City and environs. Some of these businesses were featured in Moon Denver, but not all.

Magnolia deals

On page 152 of Moon Denver I included the Magnolia Hotel in downtown Denver. Since that writing I've had a chance to visit the upgraded rooms and suites at the Magnolia. Some of the rooms are like small apartments with kitchens, fireplaces and full bathrooms--very luxurious. The bed was so comfortable I searched for purchase information before leaving! My favorite aspect of their remodel is the subterranean faux river, which provides the best seat in the house during the free breakfast buffet (only the sound of water running over rocks that blocks out the TV noise). This weekend only they are offering discounted rates, 4/24-4/26!

Friday, April 24, 2009

GONE!...Belly Maternity

I keep hoping that when I notice a vacant storefront that the business has just relocated, but it appears Belly Maternity of Cherry Creek North has gone belly up. I included Belly on page 125 of Moon Denver and was a previous customer of this store. Not so frequent since my pregnancy was over a few years ago, but still I did refer friends there. Although their site remains up, it does not seem to be taking orders and phone numbers are disconnected. Time to start researching the latest shops that will fill the void!

Bargains, bargains everywhere!

Two brilliant freelance writers are the local guides for http://www.milehighonthecheap.com/, to help residents and tourists alike find affordable ways to enjoy the Mile High City. They just launched a few months ago, well past deadlines for Moon Denver. Otherwise, I would have certainly included this valuable resource for readers of my Moon Denver guidebook.

GONE!...Ski Train Shocker!!

I was totally stunned to read in the Denver Post today, http://www.denverpost.com/breakingnews/ci_12195854, that the Ski Train to Winter Park has been sold and likely already left town for Canada! I wrote about Winter Park and the Ski Train in Moon Denver on pp. 188-190. What a strange time to loose the only non-car or bus mode of transportation to a ski resort. I really loved that ride up and was looking forward to doing it again and again.

GONE! Spice Boys of the Rockies

Was it the off the beaten path location or the awkward name that did not work for this business? I included Spice Boys of the Rockies on page 143 of Moon Denver in the Shops chapter. It truly was a special find of a place with great customer service, yummy ice cream and chocolate and I was sad to drive by the other day and notice a new business in the space (which I want to check out soon!). Their site, www.spiceboysrock.com, is still up but there are no updates so I cannot find out if they just relocated. I do like the location just a couple of blocks from the Denver Art Museum but it seems light on foot traffic.

Cool Denver blog, http://buckfifty.org

Denver artists Hugh Graham and Jill Hadley-Hooper have been blogging away for months and I wish I had known about them when I was writing Moon Denver. A gem to include in the next edition! Their blog is http://buckfifty.org and it's all about celebrating Denver's sesquicentennial in 2009! So many cool Denver artists, writers, hipsters contributing to this blog, it's hard to know where to begin. Cartoonist Kenny Be of Westword, Patricia Calhoun of Westword, artist Bill Amundson and more, more, more!! Tons of history with photos and insightful stories.

Monday, April 20, 2009

Broadmoor Spring Sale!

On page 184 of Moon Denver I included the Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs. I just got notice that the Broadmoor is offering a 50% sale on their new cottages for only 72 hours, April 24-April 26. Go to www.broadmoor.com or call 800-634-7711 to make a reservation!

GONE! Rocky Mountain News

Sadly the rumors I referred to on page 217 of Moon Denver were true: The Rocky Mountain News folded just shy of its 150th birthday! It's strange not to have that choice anymore but ambitious reporters and others have started up www.indenvertimes.com as a replacement. They need subscribers to keep it going! A handful of Rocky columnists are now on deck at the Denver Post, which is a shadow of its former self in these hard times.

Sunday, April 19, 2009

GONE! One Home

On page 139 of Moon Denver I profiled One Home of Cherry Creek, a hip modern furniture and design store. Sadly the store closed up this spring but Heather Mourer's design services are still available through the old website, www.onehomedesign.com. So far the cool retail space on 3rd Ave. is still up for grabs!

GONE!...but not forgotten

One of the main purposes of this blog is to keep the printed Moon Denver guidebook as up-to-date and fresh as possible. I'll be doing this in two ways: recording businesses that have closed and noting new businesses that opened after Moon Denver was completed. Unfortunately our sour economy has taken its toll on several businesses that I included and I've been completely shocked a few times to round the corner in a bustling neighborhood and see empty shop windows or read about another business folding. But change is GOOD and I'll certainly note the replacements and such.

MOON DENVER HAS LANDED!

It's been a busy week with the arrival of Moon Denver--right here, in Denver!! The book should be available at the Tattered Cover and other major bookstores that carry the Moon Handbooks line. The book looks wonderful with the big blue bear cover. My thanks again to all who shared their local wisdom under intense deadlines.

Moon Denver due April 2009

Moon Denver will be available as of April 1, 2009 in stores and online. I will post upcoming related events and reviews of the book on this blog and on my site, www.mindysink.com. This blog will also include any corrections, to-be-included in the next edition and other worthwhile Denver travel tips.
