Denver's Darlington Electric Fountain

About the time my Moon Denver guidebook was wrapping up, the city of Denver was showing off the newly rebuilt Darlington Electric Fountain. There will be a special night of celebration from 6-8 p.m. in City Park on Memorial Day to turn the fountain and lights on for the season during a jazz concert. I think this is so cool. Back in the early 1900s a few of these prismatic fountains were built around the country--try to imagine that time before Vegas and Disney fountains galore--including this one is City Park's Ferril Lake. At the time it was a huge draw to the park and people loved to come out on a warm night and watch the water and lights blink on and off during a concert. Unfortunately, it fell into disrepair for many years to the point where it had to be rebuilt and not just renovated. Equipped with more colors and LED lights, the Darlington Electric Fountain is once again bringing people to City Park in the summer months.

Mile High Loop upcoming events

I wrote about the Mile High Loop in City Park in my Moon Denver guidebook even though the trail was still a work in progress. Well, many of those changes/additions are now coming to fruition! On June 2, Mayor Hickenlooper and others will be on hand to unveil the new 5,280 marker on the Mile High Loop. The trail hits the 5,280 elevation four times, but when I walked it recently I did not see any mention of this fact anywhere so it's exciting to know it will now be official in at least one spot. THe marker will be at the west side of the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. I thought the loop was a great walk on a day when the trees were in full bloom and the park was not very crowded--a real step into nature in the middle of the city.

There are still many outdoor summer movie events, and you can find some at www.denver.org. Many of these happen in Denver parks, up in Boulder and I know the schedule for summer movies at Red Rocks Amphitheater was recently posted.

1. Climb up to the Capitol Dome and take in the view
2. Spend a night in the Brown Palace Hotel (or just take a tour)
3. Visit Confluence Park (and read about the history of founding Denver on the spot)
4. Drive, walk, horseback or bicycle through Garden of the Gods
5. Run the Bolder Boulder
6. See a concert at Red Rocks Amphitheater (or just take a hike there)
7. Listen to the elk in Rocky Mountain National Park
8. Check out the Great Stupa of Dharmakaya
9. Take in a Rockies game at Coors Field (or take a tour and be sure to enjoy the view from the Mile High seats)
10. Visit the Denver Art Museum and don't miss the Western art

UPDATE: Thanks to Elizabeth's funny comments to this post, I feel the need to clarify--although the clarifications are also in my book. Of course I meant climbing the stairs to the inside of the Capitol building dome. They were closed for a few years, but I believe remain open these days for those not afraid of heights or a bit of steep exercise:)

Denver's Olivea restaurant

Last Friday I had the pleasure of dining out at Olivea on 17th St. This restaurant opened after my Moon Denver guidebook came out in spring 2009, but I am certainly going to include this place in my next edition. Overall I say it was pretty fantastic. Simple and sophisticated i decor, food and staff. Really enjoyed the fava bean crostini--one of many small plates that can be had for only $5 at the bar--and the ravioli was scrumptious, followed by a tasty panna cotta with berries. I went with a girlfriend and now hope to go back for a date night with hubby.

Westin Westminster goes SOLAR

I was invited to a cocktail reception at the Westin Westminster earlier this month. I included this hotel in my Moon Denver guidebook as the perfect halfway place for an overnight stay because it is between Denver and Boulder. Such stunning views--even from the patio--and delicious food, but the big news of the evening was the hotel's new plans to add solar panels making more than 5 percent of their 369 guest rooms solar powered.

Free Denver Parks & Recreation AGAIN

In my Moon Denver guidebook I mentioned that Denver teamed up with Kaiser to provide FREE access to Denver Parks and Recreation facilities--especially those with swimming pools--during summer for youth under 17. Denver Cupcake Truck

When writing my Moon Denver guidebook I had a special box in the "Restaurants" chapter devoted solely to cupcake shops. During the editing this got pulled out and the various cupcake shops were mixed in with the neighborhood restaurants. I still stand by my first call to highlight cupcakes because this town loves 'em! There is now a Denver Cupcake Truck, and if you go on Facebook and join their page you can find out where it will be on any given day. It's cute--like an ice cream truck with no worries about melting.

Denver bicycle program

Earth Day in Denver kicked off the Mile High City's new bicycle rental program. The rainy weather wasn't much help, but it's just a beginning. The cute red bikes with handy baskets on front are awaiting riders at stations all over town--my daughter keeps pointing them out, "More bikes, Mama!" Go to www.denver.bcycle.com. Doors Open Denver

I'm baffled that this annual event, Doors Open Denver, is not in the Arts & Leisure chapter of my Moon Denver guidebook. I could have sworn that I included it. Well, I certainly will do so in the next edition. Basically, Doors Open Denver, is a chance for the general public to visit select locations around the city for one weekend--the lineup changes each year too--for guided and self-guided tours. Yesterday my daughter and I waited in a very, very long line in Union Station to see the Platte Valley Model Railroad that is housed in the basement and typically only open at night when she's in bed. A big sign says that it's the oldest of it's kind in the U.S.--since 1933. My daughter was not thrilled that she could not touch the toy trains, but such is the world of model trains. From what I heard from other people in line, the other tour sites--particularly the D & F tower--also had long lines. My tip: go early!!!

I am feeling pretty cool. I have discovered something new in Denver that I don't think many people know about. First, oops! A little oversight in my Moon Denver guidebook "Shops" chapter. I should have certainly included Eron Johnson Antiques on N. Broadway as it is a rather grand antique store with a stellar reputation. The other night though I went to a CD release party, www.davidrynhart.com, at the Eron Johnson Antiques warehouse. The fact that I got completely lost trying to find the warehouse made it seem all that much more special! I went to www.eronjohnsonantiques.com later and scrolled down to "Events" where I learned that they do hose the occasional random event there. These seem to be events that you might only know about if you were invited by the group speaking/performing, but I don't think they are closed to the general public. Worth checking from time to time for an unexpected night out.

Denver souvenir t-shirts

The other day my sister-in-law was in town and wanted to get her kids a souvenir t-shirt from Denver. First stop was Little Man Ice Cream, where of course the kids had eaten within hours of arriving in the Mile High City. Unfortunately, the cute styles and colors only have the business name but do not actually say "Denver, CO" anywhere on them. My sister-in-law's t-shirt criteria is that is have the name of the city, and not just business. This put us on a mission in a very short period of time.

We started with Rockmount Ranch Wear, where I usually suggest people get souvenir tees. But, no! Only some adult men's t-shirts actually say "Denver, CO." Still, I recommend them.
Moving on, we hit a souvenir shop on the 16th Street Mall and left empty-handed because the styles were so dull--not feminine or--can I say this about a souvenir t-shirt?--or sophisticated. Just white and boxy crew neck tees. Next up was the Denver Art Museum, which also was rejected on style.
Success!!! At the Denver Zoo of all places. Very cute. I mean, if they were adult and maybe didn't say Denver Zoo, I would have bought one for me.

I'll be on the hunt for more souvenir t-shirts and maybe it's detail I can include in my next Moon Denver guidebook.

Denver's best lingerie store

I admit to an oversight in the "Shops" chapter of my Moon Denver guidebook. I should have included Le Soutien, www.lesoutien.com, for women in need of quality undergarments and fabulous retail service. Over in the Cherry Creek North neighborhood, I wandered in to Le Soutien recently and within seconds the saleswoman had me literally sized up and, like a NASCAR pit crew, suddenly changed into the bra of my dreams. All I had to do was decide on color. It's like finding the world's best hairdresser, I swear. Count on Le Soutien being not only listed but highlighted in the next edition of Moon Denver.

Award-winning pies at Denver's Bang!

New: Denver Biscuit Company

If you like Southern food like I do, make a stop at the new Denver Biscuit Company on E. Colfax Ave. One day I was driving down the street when a bus stop ad caught my eye with the word biscuits. Yum! I was there within two weeks or less and loved the not-too-sweet strawberry shortcake. Everything on the menu is under $10 and it's a mix of sweet and savory dishes made with biscuits. New name: Denver Chalk Art Festival

Hmmm. I just learned that the annual La Piazza dell'Arte event held in Larimer Sqaure has changed its name to the Denver Chalk Art Festival. I did include La Piazza dell'Arte in the "Arts & Leisure" chapter of my Moon Denver guidebook and I do think it's a very unique event for the Mile High City. I have no idea why the name was changed though. Their talks about the Italian tradition of chalk art...less wine and Italian food at this year's event?

The Eggshell has moved

On page 60 of my Moon Denver guidebook I wrote about a favorite Denver breakfast spot, The Eggshell, in the Cherry Creek North neighborhood. They recently moved to 235 Fillmore St., just a few blocks from their previous location. Otherwise, it seems about the same as before with dependably good breakfast and brunch fare.

Bye-bye Stylelicious

I just got an email the other day that the fashionable kids clothing store Stylelicious of Denver's Cherry Creek North neighborhood is closing. I went to their website for details, but they don't mention on there if they are going to just have an online presence or if there is a closing date. I hope to swing by later this week for details. We have bought some really cute clothes there and will miss them. I wrote about Stylelicious in my Moon Denver guidebook "Shops" chapter and I have to say that the Cherry Creek North shopping district seems to be going through a contraction still with so many independent businesses closing. Too bad. I'm curious to see what types of businesses appear next.

UPDATE: We hit the sale yesterday and apparently the owners of Stylelicious are moving to So. Cal. where they may reopen. I think Denver needs more hip children's clothing boutiques than So. Cal., but it's not up to me.

Secret dining out in Denver

Dog parks in Denver

It's a little embarrassing how easy it is to forget that there is an amazing national park practically in my backyard! I did of course write about Rocky Mountain National Park in my Moon Denver guidebook Excursions chapter. We just spent a few days up there over Spring Break. On the plus side, no crowds or traffic to contend with at all. Then again, BRRRR! Still perfect snowshoes conditions up there. I'm going to be adding Cub Lake and The Pool hikes to the next edition of my Moon Denver guidebook--especially for families and novices. And I'm so curious to learn more about intrepid traveler Isabella Bird...

Eldora Nordic

I included the Eldora Mountain Resort in my Moon Denver guidebook and I'd like to add a few details. For one thing, kids under 5 pay only $8 for lift tickets! Woo-hoo! Loving a bargain and my daughter sure likes the chairlift. Also, I am excited to get better at cross-country skiing and had a blast in a lesson there with my 4-year old recently. However, there isn't much flat land for us beginners on those trails. Maybe better for snowshoes and intermediates. Either way, I highly recommend the twice daily nordic classes offered--such a kind and patient instructor.

Meanwhile, down in Nederland....we're looking forward to the Carousel of Happiness opening this spring and seeing if it will be worthy of inclusion in the next edition of my Moon Denver guidebook.

night out at Dazzle

Last night we were there for Gabrielle Louise, a local folk musician, who also invited David Rynhart on stage. I admit that I'm not well-versed in local music, but I just needed this little sample to get excited about the local talent in Denver. Evergreen ice skating

In the "Arts & Leisure" chapter of my Moon Denver guidebook I wrote about ice skating outdoors in Evergreen. This morning we had a chance to enjoy this as a family and now I have a few practical tips to share: Go early! We arrived about 8:30 a.m. and by the time we left at 11 a.m., the parking lot was full. Plus, even though it was only in the low 40s when we left, the conditions on the ice seem to be deteriorating by the day and as the day goes on. The good news is that in the afternoons they are offering half-price rentals and fees. Do call ahead because they only update the hours and ice condition the morning of each day. They do have snacks for sale, as well as souvenir t-shirts and sweatshirts. I did realize the lake is a wetland and attracts a variety of birds and birders. We too a nice walk around part of the lake and spotted a red-winged blackbird.

Max and Garbarini boutiques bring designers to Denver

Oh, so exciting! I just saw this article in the Denver Post and have to share. Two of my favorite Denver shops, which are of course included in my Moon Denver guidebook, are celebrating big anniversaries this spring and celebrating well, in style! Both Max and Garbarini in Cherry Creek North will have big name designers in their stores. Nicole Miller, Donal Pliner and, goosebumps, Diane Von Furstenberg maybe. Wow! Note to self: earn a lot of shopping money fast.

Boulder is #1

I included Boulder in the Excursions chapter of my Moon Denver guidebook and it is the town where I grew up. According to a Gallup "well-being" poll, Boulder just happens to be the #1 city in the country for happiness. I love that. Colorado ranks at #7 overall among states. Echo Mtn. closest Denver skiing

Over the weekend we had a chance to check out the relatively new Echo Mountain Ski Resort, which is a mere 45 minute from downtown Denver. I'm not sure where this might fit in the next edition of my Moon Denver guidebook...not quite an Excursion so more likely Arts & Leisure will get a downhill skiing/snowboarding area. For proximity and price, Echo Mountain is great. For conditions, not so much. In our case it made the most sense to spend less time driving and less money on a first ski lesson for our 4-year old. The wind was intense and freezing cold when we arrived about 9 a.m., though it did improve a bit before we left in the early afternoon. I think this is mostly manmade snow. Echo Mtn. started out as a terrain park in 2004 and it still feels like a snowboarder destination for the most part (can't remember I heard "dude!" so much in so short a time ;), if you get the picture). So with those caveats, I do recommend Echo Mtn. to others and may go again with my own family.

Wen Chocolates farewell?

It turns out that Wen Chocolates on Platte Street is not just sold out, but closed for good. I included Wen Chocolates on page 143 of my Moon Denver guidebook and was a happy customer there. Now I hear that they are leaving and it's not clear yet if they will reopen elsewhere or if another confection shop will go into that space. Stay tuned...I'll be doing chocolate research when needed.

Lovin' my Denver Highlands neighborhood!

Yesterday I headed out--albeit at the last minute of about 4 pm on the day before Valentine's Day--for some chocolates for my hubby. I live in the Denver Highlands neighborhood, one of the maps and areas featured in my Moon Denver guidebook. First stop was Wen Chocolates on Platte Street where I was stopped cold by a "closed" sign. What?! Their busiest weekend of the year and closed? Well, sold out the sign said. Cool, that's what happens with fresh food. I decided to head to Wordshop in Highlands Square because I was confident that the sweet owner would know where to find chocolates. She wasn't in but her salesclerk was just as nice and not only did I find a terrific card, she told me to go around the corner to the Perfect Petal where I found--unbelievably--locally made chocolates in a cute box. Whew! Mission accomplished in record time with friendly people. Life is good.

No more Bump n' Grind in Denver

Driving down 17th the other day I noticed the empty windows at what used to the be Bump n' Grind Cafe. I highlighted Bump n' Grind in my Moon Denver guidebook for their hilarious cross-dressing brunch and delicious sandwiches and sweets. And no more. Such a pity to lose one of Denver's truly unique places.

Tripbase.com travel secrets

I've been tagged! Not with graffiti, but to join other travel bloggers in an online e-book of "best kept travel secrets." The places I'm going to include in my blog today are also in my Moon Denver guidebook so not exactly secrets to my readers. However, these are places that when I was researching and writing my book (and even since when promoting my book) have found more people who said, "Where? Never heard of it." than those who had been there.

1. The Shambhala Mountain Center, www.shambhalamountain.org, in northern Colorado. This place is maybe not a secret to Buddhists or some yoginis, but it is a fabulous retreat for people of any ilk who want to spend an hour or a day or a week in a pristine and peaceful Rocky Mountain setting.

3 reasons to go to Shambhala Mountain Center:

a) So peaceful as many people are here to meditate and it's all out of cell phone range.
b) Mountains as far as the eye can see.
c) The Great Stupa of Dharmakaya is an incredible example of religious architecture not seen often in the U.S.

2. Manitou Springs is often lumped in as part of greater Colorado Springs in travel books whereas I see it as a separate destination with such a distinctive history and personality.

3 reasons to go to Manitou Springs:

a) You can drink the water. Typically I like to soak in a hot springs, but here they have uniquely-designed water fountains scattered around the town and each features different elements of the underground springs. Free!
b) Explore Pikes Peak, the America the Beautiful inspiration. You can walk, run, drive and take a cog railway up this fourteener.
c) Check out Miramont Castle Museum for its bizarre history and impressive stone structure.

3. Devil's Thumb Ranch Resort, is just outside the ski resort town of Winter Park. I know, a secret resort? Yes, sort of. It's Colorado's only cross-country ski resort and it's been recently upgraded in the most ecologically friendly ways.

a) So mellow to just hear the sh-sh of people's skis gliding across the snow or the quiet crunch of snowshoes.
b) The spa is amazing for a yoga class with a spectacular view or a much-needed massage.
c) Wood-burning fireplaces in the cabins for that rustic cozy night.

I am so excited to go to the next Family Fun day at the Denver Center Theatre Academy down at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts Complex! I just learned of this through a friend, so I will be checking it out to share more details with my Moon Denver guidebook readers soon. OK, not until early March. Denver's stock show

Today is the last day of Denver's annual National Western Stock Show and Rodeo! In Denver this means an official end to the holiday season when the public holiday lights displays come down and Santa is put away. I just love seeing friends post photos of their little ones dressed up as mini cowgirls and cowboys to go check out the Stock Show, or hearing about their "mutton bustin'" days. We enjoyed the parade up 17th St. this year and we had a bit of excitement when one of the longhorn steers tried to walk backwards as they turned from Wynkoop Street up 17th, but the cowboys did their job and kept it all going smoothly. Farewell Frolick!

This morning I headed off for a little shopping in Highland Square and was shocked to find that Frolick went out of business! I included Frolick in the pages of my Moon Denver guidebook and would take out-of-towners there for shopping. I could always find something there--a summer skirt, easy t-shirt or special dress--and the owner was so wonderful with helpful ideas and tips. What a loss. Well, don't let it keep you from the area because I saw some cute tops at Dragonfly and I'm probably going back to the Max outlet store for a sweater!

Denver's best Santa

Ho, ho, ho! My personal opinion--and what I've heard from other families here in the Mile High City--is that the best Santa visit can be found in Larimer Square. I wrote about Larimer Square in my Moon Denver guidebook, but I think I neglected to mention this holiday highlight. Santa Claus has a special spot behind the shops the restaurants where visitors can take their own photos--no pressure to buy any expensive packages! Make a day of it with a stop for lunch and a horse-drawn sleigh ride under the beautiful awning of holiday lights over the square.

Last night I had the pleasure of attending an indoor "concert" at the Denver Botanic Gardens and realized that I maybe should have mentioned that possibility in my Moon Denver guidebook. The outdoor summer concerts are very popular--I think they built the new two-story parking lot just to accommodate those crowds--but it's good to know that when the gardens are decorated for Blossoms of Light, there is still a lot on offer at the gardens in the chilly weather.

When I walked into the Udi's Cafe at Stapleton this morning I realized that I had made a big mistake--in not including this wonderful place in my Moon Denver guidebook! Oops. I confess, some places got overlooked. I love the story behind Udi's--a real person, an immigrant actually who became a entrepreneur with a sandwich delivery business then bakery and now restaurants. Denver's Artisan Center popular!

Wow, I was out doing some holiday shopping in Denver's Cherry Creek North neighborhood yesterday and the action was at the Artisan Center. In my Moon Denver guidebook I wrote about how this shop is busy yearround, but ridiculous! It was a gorgeous sunny Colorado day and there were at least 4 men sitting outside waiting while (maybe) their wives shopped inside. I could already turn around in there. Exciting to see enthusiastic shopping in this troubled economy.

I was in REI the other day--the flagship store that I wrote about on page 141 of my Moon Denver guidebook--and discovered that in the basement where you pick up rentals (as well as online orders with free shipping direct to the store), there are bargains! Kind of like when the rental car company sells off the fleet, here they have rental gear for sale as-is. I saw skis and boots at significant markdowns. Just another place to look for deals here in the Mile High City.

The 32nd annual festival opened this weekend with the much-talked about "Precious" and the schedule has lots of big name stars, films and many filmmakers with a Denver connections. With the snow falling, it's a perfect weekend for a movie or two...or three or more.

Marriott's Second Home Kitchen & Bar in Denver's Cherry Creek District

Of course I included the JW Marriott in my Moon Denver guidebook, but I don't think I really recommended it. Well, now I do! I had a chance to tour a suite and nosh on appetizers at the Second Home Kitchen & Bar. First the suite: did I see two bathrooms? Wow. Amazing views of the mountains, downtown, Cheesman Park, walking distance to great Cherry Creek shops and such a spacious room, or make that rooms with an 's'. The patio with cozy outdoor modern fire pit is the best for a chic night out. I cannot wait to go back and make a meal of those sweet potato chips and dip! The homemade tater tots were to die for--all of it as advertised, delicious and just sophisticated enough comfort food. I will be adding Second Home as its on restaurant listing in my next edition.

Denver's Union Station

Gates Planetarium tip

Here's a real life insider tip for anyone who goes to Gates Planetarium to see a show: no late admittance whatsoever. We showed up 3 minutes late on a very busy Sunday at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science and were told it's against fire code to allow anyone in the darkened theater. Good to know when planning a visit! In fact, you should be there at least 10 minutes early. People line up even when it's not sold out.

While still a fledgling annual event, Denver Arts Week is about to launch its 3rd year and I'm hearing about lots of interesting deals, discounts and freebies that are tie ins to the Mile High City's cultural scene. I did write about Denver Arts Week in the pages of my Moon Denver guidebook but honestly had been unaware of its first two years, so this year I'm looking forward to exploring.

For starters, check out C & H Glassworks in the Denver suburb of Lakewood, www.chglassworks.com, where you can see glass blowing demonstrations this weekend, Nov. 6-8. I would love to see a little glass orange pumpkin made--and can even buy one for 10% off or enter to win a $100 gift certificate. Watch the artists at work and tour the gallery.

Denver's fall snowstorm!

Unexpected storm but welcome moisture hit the Mile High City before Halloween this year. Although in my Moon Denver guidebook I mentioned these occasionally paralyzing snowstorms, I was thinking of wintertime! Flights at Denver International Airport have been hugely affected and many businesses shut down this week but now it looks like the sun is coming out and trick or treating will go on in the slush.

Little House musical coming to Denver

Tickets just went on sale this week for the upcoming musical, "Little House on the Prairie" at Denver's Buell Theatre, playing Dec. 15-27. This starts Melissa Gilbert as Ma, and she is of course famous for playing Laura in the long-running TV version of the classic books. Haunted Manitou Springs?

In my Moon Denver guidebook I wrote about Manitou Springs on pages 185-188 and it is a place I truly love and like to take friends to visit as well. I recently received an e-mail that makes Manitou a destination for those who liked to be spooked during this Halloween Season. I listed the Miramont Castle in my guidebook but did not know that there is a photo of a figure that appears in a mirror only, not the actual room. Boo! There is also an annual coffin race through town and a few other instances of "paranormal activity" at some of the town's historic mansions.

As we've enjoyed a wetter and cooler summer this year, I've not joined the complainers. Instead I have joyfully embraced the changes as being like the old days when Colorado seemed more seasonal with distinctions between summer and fall. However, now I'm ready to cry, "Uncle!" This has been such a cold fall and we're expecting snowfall before Halloween! On page 197 of my Moon Denver guidebook I address the local weather and climate. I think I forgot to mention what my sister pointed out on her visit last week, "I'll be here four days and might see all four seasons!" Well, it didn't quite get summery hot but there was spring, summer and winter all at once.

Either way, it's good for Denver that the Huffington Post has a page devoted to news of the Mile High City and elsewhere in Colorado, along with New York and Chicago. It's not like this will or should replace the Denver Post anytime soon, but nice to see additional coverage of local news.

I wrote about the biggest convention in the country devoted to beer on page 102 in my Moon Denver guidebook, The Great American Beer Festival which comes to town every October. To kick things off this year is a "citywide celebration of all things beer" because you just can't have too much of a good thing (like chocolate, beer...). The festival goes for nearly 10 days until the sold-out GABF begins. Last night I was treated to tours of the cozy cottages and suites at Highland Haven that feel like light years from the Mile High City, but are less than an hour's drive from downtown. I had not heard of this place when I was writing my Denver guidebook, or I surely would have included it in the Greater Denver Hotels listings. Honestly, I just don't know Evergreen that well but now I know exactly who I would turn to for that insider advice--the dedicated owners of this charming bed & breakfast. There are cottages intimate and private enough for a honeymoon and suites large enough for corporate retreats. The food was tasty, and in warmer months the patio is the place to sit and listen to the creek and quaking aspens. But wait, there's more! In 2010 they will debut a unique "treehouse" amidst the cottages--an elevated two-story 850-sq. ft. cabin between two large spruce trees. The treehouse will be built from sustainable materials and additional information can be found on their site, www.highlandhaven.com.

To be that close to Denver, that comfortable and well-appointed and be able to look at the stars...pretty special!

Denver's Oxford Hotel deal

I'm a proud resident of Denver's Highlands neighborhood as you may know from reading my Moon Denver guidebook. I'll be adding a new restaurant in my neighborhood to the next edition of my Denver guidebook. Tonight I had a chance to try the relatively new LoHi Steakhouse at 32nd & Tejon. I am so thrilled with the rehab inside and out on this place that I'd just about recommend it on that alone. The food is pretty basic--steaks (of course), burgers, sandwiches with dinner, lunch and brunch all served here depending on the day of the week. But it was a decent meal and if I'd had more time, I would have stayed for a chocolate pudding dessert that sounded scrumptious. My only complaint would be the way too loud music. Now I understand why the patio is always so crowded! You can probably hear each other out there. Still, the place was pretty packed with pretty people all enjoying a drink and a bite on a late summer Wednesday night. Insider tip: They also offer Little Man Ice Cream from the nearby ice cream "can" on their dessert menu.

Denver weekend: yoga and shopping

This weekend I lucked out into a little "me" time and took full advantage of it! First, I went to Kriya Yoga (see page 121 of my Moon Denver guidebook) in the Highlands for some much needed breathing and stretching in a Hatha style class. From there, I checked out a new shop called Uncommon Threads--a denim store in the heart of Highlands Square. The salesclerk was very attentive and nice, even when I didn't find the perfect pair of jeans for me. David Khan mean anything to people out there? Never heard of that designer but liked those the most. Lots to choose from for men and women. I'll be adding Uncommon Threads to the next edition of my Moon Denver guidebook.

Denver's BEST new restaurant

The Squeaky Bean restaurant did not open until 2009 so it obviously was not included in the pages of my Moon Denver guidebook. However, that is the purpose of this blog and I am thrilled to share the news! I must confess that I walk and drive by this place almost daily and it took me months to go in. I hope others won't also be deterred by mistakenly thinking it's a coffee shop. It used to be a coffee shop--two different ones, in fact--but now it is a fabulous, smart restaurant with a seasonal menu. Last night I ate--or gobbled:)--the freshest rice/squash/pine nut//too many other tasty things salad for dinner, along with a scrumptious beet salad. I asked my husband how his shrimp BLT was, but he couldn't answer in the midst of chewing, licking his fingers, etc. The owner--an experienced Denver restauranteur--has leased land out back and is growing much of the produce himself in tidy large raised garden beds--arugula, tomatoes, herbs.

Denver's art museum powwow

I thought I knew about all of the local powwows, but I left this out of my Moon Denver guidebook. Don't you miss it too:

On Saturday, September 12, Acoma Plaza will be alive with the music and color of the 20th Annual Denver Art Museum Friendship Powwow & American Indian Cultural Celebration. The free event will begin at 10 a.m. with Gourd Dancing, followed by the grand entry at noon. Dance contests include categories ranging from tiny tot to adult. Artmaking on the plaza will include clay activities, animal painting and photo memories. Experience the sights and sounds of living traditions, connect with working artists and artisans, shop vendors for American Indian jewelry and other great items and enjoy your first (or 101st) piece of fry bread! Denver's got the best trails parks

I wrote a lot about Denver's fabulous parks and trails in my Moon Denver guidebook and now they've been recognized as the best in the country:

The July 2009 edition of Parks and Recreation, the official publication of the National Recreation and Parks Association, has named Denver as Best Trail Parks in the United States. The honor comes during National Parks and Recreation month.

“If a city is a great tourist destination, you want its parks to be a part of that,” says Peter Harnik, director of the Trust for Public Land’s Center for City Park Excellence in the article. “Parks have so many components, and people love parks for so many different reasons. From natural ambiance to recreational opportunities to the unexpected things that just happen there when strangers interact.”

Denver has one of the biggest biking, hiking and jogging trail systems in the nation, a network of 100 miles of paved, off-road trails that cross the City. I posted this earlier this month:

I was chatting with Matt of the Wynkoop Brewing Company about which bars in town do not have TVs. Fantastic idea for a "call-out" in my next edition! We came up with My Brother's Bar, the Cruise Room... (Swimclub 32, alas RIP) and now I need to work on that list. Of course Wynkoop has TVs aplenty, but Matt guessed there are a mere 4 TV-less bars in the Mile High City and I think there must be more.

Denver's Sports Plus

This is one of those tips I'm almost reluctant to share in my next Moon Denver guidebook because I want to keep it for myself! The best deal on quality used (and some new) sports equipment is at Sports Plus on South Gaylord Street in the Washington Park neighborhood. Last winter my husband got skis, helmet, poles and goggles for our toddler for $50 TOTAL. Now we're onto a cute bike with training wheels. It's for all ages and all seasons and the used merchandise that they offer is in good shape. I'm over Craigslist and this is a perfect way to support a local business instead.

Denver Center for the Performing Arts subscriptions

Although I included all of the theaters within the Denver Center for the Performing Arts in the Arts & Leisure chapter of my Moon Denver guidebook, I did not tell readers about the subscriptions. Anyone can subscribe to Denver Center Attractions (Broadway shows and musicals) and/or Denver Center Theatre Company (local productions) to get ticket discounts, advance notice, great seats and more! A great way to save yourself a few dollars and still support the arts. And they get some fantastic shows here--I recently saw "August" Osage County" and it was splendid. I had a friend who when she had a really fabulous night out would often say, "I feel like I'm not in Denver in anymore!" as if this were the highest compliment. But I know what she means in that a night of good theatre can transport you from your own reality for a time.
